Does your coffee contain more calories than your Christmas cake?

0

Catch a whiff of caramel and cinnamon as you stroll the High Street? It can only mean one thing; Christmas coffees have arrived.

Adorned with mounds of whipped cream and sumptuous fillets of sweet sauces, these sweet creations have become a holiday staple.

With infusions of everything from gingerbread to Terry’s chocolate orange, there’s something to tease your taste buds.

But before you take a sip, you might want to take a break. Because with some of these festive creations containing over ten teaspoons of sugar, you might be better off sticking to your regular latte.

Here, GIULIA CROUCH holds up a cup of coffee to see which ones are worth the calories. . .

COSTA

Quality street Caramel Penny Latte

Giulia Crouch gives her verdict on a selection of this year’s party drinks – including Costa’s Quality Street Toffee Penny Latte (pictured)

Price: £ 3.95

Calories: 330

Teaspoons of sugar: 9.6

Equivalent to: A bowl of trifle.

Caramel and coffee are natural friends, so it’s hard not to like this new addition for 2021. But due to the intense caramel flavor, it’s hard to drink a lot. Good, because it contains more sugar than a can of Coke. 2/5

Quality Street The Purple One Latte

Price: £ 3.95

Calories: 348

Teaspoons of sugar: 8.5

Equivalent to: Eight and a half roasted potatoes.

If you’re expecting this to taste like a purple Quality Street, be prepared to be disappointed. It only tastes like hot spicy milk. To add insult to injury, you also receive a purple grade rue to prove how different it tastes. If anything, I feel anti-festive now, and more so at the idea that I could have had eight and a half roasts instead. 0/5

After Eight Hot Chocolate

Giulia said the After Eight hot chocolate (pictured) is super forgiving and is literally a drinkable After Eight

Price: £ 3.95

Calories: 343

Teaspoons of sugar: 8.7

Equivalent to: A serving of cheese and cookies.

Literally a drinkable After Eight. Super forgiving, but who cares when it’s this good? Saying that, after three big sips I finished, it’s so rich. 5/5

Terry’s Chocolate Orange® Hot Chocolate

Giulia said Terry's Chocolate Orange® hot chocolate (pictured right) is for those who love Terry's orange chocolate.

Price: £ 3.95

Calories: 379

Teaspoons of sugar: 10.6

Equivalent to: A third of an entire Christmas dinner.

If you like Terry’s Chocolate Orange, you’ll like this one. I, alas, no. What sort of fool would like to ruin chocolate by adding orange? 3/5

Cafe Néron

Gingerbread Latte

Price: £ 3.85

Calories: 151

Teaspoons of sugar: 4.5

Equivalent to: Three pigs in blankets.

what’s not to love about a gingerbread latte? It’s Christmas in a mug, right? Not if it’s very bitter, with a bunch of cinnamon on top of two inches of heavy, fat cream. I would much rather eat three pigs in blankets. 0/5

Hot chocolate with mint and chocolate chips

Giulia said the Mint Choc Chip Hot Chocolate (pictured) is a classic hot chocolate with a wonderful hint of mint

Price: £ 3.95

Calories: 279

Teaspoons of sugar: 10.3

Equivalent to: A slice of Christmas cake.

Classic hot chocolate with a wonderful hint of mint, whipped cream and chocolate dusting. These can easily taste synthetic if the barista has a heavy hand with the syrup, but it was well balanced. 4/5

Salted caramel latte

Giulia said Salted Caramel Latte (pictured) had a good dose of coffee, but lacked the memorable wow factor

Price: £ 3.85

Calories: 167

Teaspoons of sugar: 5.4

Equivalent to: Three slices of bacon.

It offers a good shot of coffee with a smoky sweetness. The big swirl of salted caramel sauce on the whipped cream was also welcome. But, overall, it lacks a memorable wow factor. 2/5

Hot chocolate with hazelnuts

Giulia said beyond the generous swirl of whipped cream, the hazelnut hot chocolate (pictured) had no nutty flavor.

Price: £ 3.95

Calories: 262

Teaspoons of sugar: 9.6

Equivalent to: A portion of stuffing.

I had high hopes for this, I imagined Nutella in a cup. Maybe the barista just forgot to add the syrup, but beyond the generous swirl of whipped cream, it didn’t have any nutty flavor. 1/5

Starbucks

Hot Chocolate Fudge Brownie

Price: £ 3.45

Calories: 297

Teaspoons of sugar: 9.7

Equivalent to: Two servings of roast turkey.

I don’t really understand what a fudge brownie is Christmas, but this year Starbucks has judged it that way. For me, it’s way too sweet and not very chocolatey. It also presents a logistical challenge – there is such a quantity of chocolate cream that it is impossible to drink without getting it all over your face. 2/5

Caramel nut latte

Giulia said that Toffee Nut Latte (pictured) has a delicious, toasted nut flavor, wrapped in a smooth, smooth caramel taste

Price: £ 3.45

Calories: 201

Teaspoons of sugar: 3.4

Equivalent to: Two portions of chocolate log.

Grilled, heartwarming with an excellent sweet crumb, this festive drink is a staple of the season for a reason. The flavor of toasted nuts is wrapped in a smooth, smooth caramel taste. Delicious. 4/5

Price: £ 3.45

Calories: 236

Teaspoons of sugar: 5.9

Equivalent to: Fourteen servings of sauce.

Well, much better than Caffe Nero, this one has a nice spice and a creamy texture. The best is the gingerbread filling. 3/5

Eggnog latte

Price: £ 3.45

Calories: 287

Teaspoons of sugar: 7.7

Equivalent to: A serving of Christmas pudding.

It’s been on the Starbucks menu for years, but I’ve never tried it. More deceive me. It is creamy and smooth with a warm nutmeg base. And, oddly, considering how much sugar it has, it doesn’t taste too sweet. It’s also in a glass cup which lets you see the different creamy layers with the milk froth on top. 5/5

Mcdonalds

Grand Latte Chocolate Fudge

Giulia said the Choco Fudge Latte Large (pictured) is very bitter and tastes very synthetic

Price: £ 2.09

Calories: 226

Teaspoons of sugar: 6.6

Equivalent to: A pie.

Very bitter and super synthetic in taste, only saved by the whipped cream and fudge sauce. I’d be plump to eat the minced pie any day. 0/5

Luxury hot chocolate

Giulia said Hot Chocolate Deluxe (pictured) tasted like hot chocolate from the gas station

Giulia said Hot Chocolate Deluxe (pictured) tasted like hot chocolate from the gas station

Price: £ 1.39

Calories: 201

Teaspoons of sugar: 6.6

Equivalent to: Portion of mashed potatoes.

There is nothing fancy about it. It tastes like hot chocolate from the gas station – way too sweet and watery. But it is one of the cheapest. 2/5
